customize Gnome or Kde desktop

Hello i would like to know how can i customise my Gnome or Kde desktop because i see some screenshots on this site and i'd like to have a desktop like this.
If you can inform me about some site or tutorials which can help me to understand all this. How to change the themes, the program appearences, the icones, to have the same desktop that those on screenshots.

you could try using a different wm with gnome or kde. openbox intergrates well with kde and gnome desktops.

you could also try and get yourself one of these apps.

torsmo, gdesklets, karamba.

personnaly i dont use them, but for what you want they seem ideal
