reviews are too big. So i will just write what i believe.
This sounds better than the apple iPod, though this device cannot be labled as an iPod killer, the iPod is still a more simpler, organised and capacity wise, larger than the PSP.
Graphics are better than the nintendo GBA and DS. Though it has no touchpad the sony gamepad is a tried and true product. The DS is still a good potable console in my books. (stupid addictive Wario Ware)
Photo Capabilities are better than the iPod photo the most obvious reason is because the PSP's screen is more than twice as large as the iPod photo and displays a damn lot more colours. Though the PSP reduces the size of the image so it can be easily displayed on screen (which is a dissapointment) but does not require additional software to put photos onto it unlike the iPod photo.
Movies on UMD look damn good. due to the use of MP4 H.264 (which is smaller than today's DVD format and is going to be used on the next generation HD DVD Blu-Ray disks) though you cannot seem to create these files and view them from memory stick. bloody sony. sony has also made it difficult to create your own widescreen movies...
The wireless (801.11b) can connect to your router (for downloading firmware updates only atm) or adhoc to other PSPs for network play. It is also possible to use a tunneling service like kai's xlink to play other people online though it requires a bit of setting up.
THe wide screen menuing system looks great. playing music looks terrific on wide screen. The type, slow moving background (the background reminds me of the default Apple computer backgrounds) and the menus feels satisfying. in some parts of setup its a little slow but after everything is all go!
Music Playback sounds great, though the shuffle function seems to only shuffle within a group until it reaches the end and then it will move onto the next group. Very annoying. iPod wins on this haha.
Finally Battery. So many people have been commenting on this. I only have two games, puyo pop fever and everyone's golf. everyone's golf can last up to 6.5 hours with LCD on low and sound off. music playback can last up to 10 hours (LCD off). When i get my dirty greasy mitts on GT4 i believe that it will last 3-4 hours.
colossus72: You can only view the UMD movies from the Demo Disk unfortunatly at the moment. They show movie trailers and game movies. The definition is great but because its on a lower resolution i do not know how well it would look on a large TV or projector.
Wynton: i dont get enough gameage to actually get cramps. (20min tram ride to uni). Ask colossus72 haha.
and mine is a Japanese made PSP - it is identical I think to the US launch PSP - English menus, etc. Only readily apparent difference is the manual language. I think the only difference between it and the US launch PSP will be the screen - early ones made in Japan have a Sharp lcd, ones made in China (the ones likely to appear on US & UK shores) have a Samsung lcd. Some claim that the Japanese units have better build quality and that the Sharp screen is a better screen, but that's probably baloney.
It's a great machine, I bought a gig mem stick and have been playing at getting movies and such on it, and the graphics on the few games I have look fantastic - if you want a great game for the first day you have the machine, check out Lumines. I just got it and wish I'd gotten instead of RR when I first bought one.
I've had no problems with UMDs flying out of the machine or sticky buttons - I do believe that was more internet hype. I will say the offset button has a slightly different tactile feel though, but it always works. No dead pixels on the 2 units I've owned.

Oldness of the thread aside, I have to say after a brief period of "Why the hell did I buy this thing?" I have really started to enjoy the PSP. The latest Metal Gear title is amazing and I'm stoked to buy the GPS dongle.
