Last weekend at the cottage, a buddy of mine and I enjoyed watching a true classic, which to this day is unequalled by any other sci-fi/horror flick: ALIEN. It kinda rekindled my interest in this amazing franchise that was otherwise completely ruined by the last two movies in the series, and so I installed Aliens vs. Predator 2, played it at full effects, music off, SFX on, lights off. Still hands-down the most chilling FPS (or even game, for that matter) I've ever played. It's extremely well done with graphics that are pretty solid even today.
I've never played DOOM 3, but I hear its atmosphere is similar.
play doom 3 stoned lights off with a 5.1 theatre system angled around a king size bed with a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard and a big plasma screen infront of you, omg.
played and enjoyed both AVP2 and Doom3. In AVP2 I spent nearly a whole clip on a pipe that looked like an alien head! AVp2, as the human, has it over doom3 for atmosphere i think. AVP2 isnt as scary as the predator or alien as you are almost god like. Doom3 with the trent reznor sound mod is very scary though.
The first AVP was something of a milestone for me, the first time a game actually terrified me - first time I realized a game could terrify me. Walking down that first dark corridor, knowing something was coming before it did, knowing what it was when the shit started bleeping on your radar, knowing what it was when you saw the little bastards leap at you - but still almost shitting your pants as you tried desperately to level the aiming reticle on their disgusting mugs. Really, I think, FPSs excell in this kind of area, more so than any other: area or games.
Agreed, Vic. I never played AVP1, but if it is anythng like AVP2, I can relate.
It's all about atmosphere. One of the things that impressed me most about AVP2 was that even before I encountered any Xenomorph, I was already filled with foreboding thanks to the lighting, sfx, and the whole layout of the game.
absolutely, the first avp was fantastic. the marine campaign, with the sounds pulled straight from Aliens... just sublime. jumping around, backpedalling, chucking flares while spraying smartgun fire at that facehugger as it scurries around the room, and the whole time you're about to fall out of your seat and pee yourself. it holds a dear place in my heart.
AvP almost didnt play as Marine. Played it a lot as Predator, but when the Aliens started showing up i freaked out and unninstalled. AvP2 played lots as Marine, untill one one cut scene i was suposed to be the hero and go through some narrow sewer thing to open an hangar door from the inside on the next mission. Unninstalled.
Same w/ me. I played it, and I sware when you get to the hell stages it's so freaking scary you damn near have a heart attack, but for some reason you just want to keep on playing.
I was walking down this corridor in hell, and the lights above start clicking off one by one, so I stopped and that was the biggest mistake I have made. The pentagram appeared in the floor, and demons and crap started coming out of it. Then my Mom comes in my room and says 'Do you want something from the store?'. I wanted to tell her "NO, BUT YOU SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME YOU CRAZY B****." I am respectable though, I have common sense.
Garon Shanks AEIIV.NET Do you believe in what you see?
Did anyone find Ravenholme in Half-Life 2 to be particularly scary? I don't know about you guys, but headcrabs bugged me in the first place. Now they've got skinny ones that claw you to fucking death, black/red ones that nearly kill you in one hit via poison, and to top it all off, zombies that throw the huge black/red fuckers at you when they feel aroused at the sight of flesh.
That particular section was hard for me to play.
But the avp series, system shock 2, and doom 3 were all scary fps'. If you want another good scary game (not fps) you could give a gamecube game called Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem a chance. It's pretty good for being, for the most part, unknown.
DioS: Quake is an interesting choice. Definitely a classic.
Anyone ever play Marathon for the Mac? Came out back in '95. Three games in the series. I remember seeing a Juggernaut for the first time, and I got the hell outta there.....
I like Doom 3. I also recommend SWAT 4. It's not scary, but it is exciting and somewhat difficult. Especially when you realize there is no such thing as finding armor or health power-ups. It's very realistic and you're shooting people, not monsters/aliens/predators. I remember playing Duck Hunt in my old nintendo. Not scary at all, but something that can really be called an FPS.
Clive Barker's Undying has a few moments that'll make you come out of your skin. I think it's a lot creepier than AVP2, and with a much better storyline.
I played all the scary games and the best one, without any doubt, is AvP1. Its the only game that i have played where i actually didnt want to go on because i was too scared. Played as the marine offcourse...
AvP2 is scary, but it has less total darkness spots (and those REALLY freak me out, AvP1 was pretty much total darkness the whole game...)
Doom3 is scary, but it has too much action and no suspense. Still scary though... not AvP1
Silent Hill isnt really scary, its disturbing... same deal with system shock (even though system shock had some scary things going on - it was buttugly)
Too bad so little people played AvP1... its not worth the try anymore, because the graphics are outdated now... However, now that i think about it, that game is pretty much totally dark the whole game, so u cant really notice the graphics :)
GET AVP1. PLAY IT - lights off and stoned - AND SCREAM :p
Ive played AvP2 and Doom 3, but for some reason "We Dont Go To Ravenholm" in Half Life 2 was the scariest experience in any game ive ever had. Myst used to scare me too, i dont know why.
Ahhh, Myst. ;-) Yes, yes, I remember. One of my allt-ime favourites. Played it shiny new and original on my old Mac. Some of the sound effects/music were hauntingly beautiful, and a bit chilling. I was, in a sense, a bit freaked out the whole game that I was in an unknown place with basically no one around. Things were just "left" there. Certain rooms and items in myst also had a frightening quality to them.
If I remember correctly, of the two brothers, Achenar was the evil one, and his rooms/belongings usually inspired fear, or at least some level of apprehension. I remember one of his rooms looked like a torture chamber.
