Trillian and AOL Instant Messenger
First it was my girlfriend, then I had the same problem. After 2 new Trillian releases in a matter of 3 days, I looked up their forum and learned it was AOL who wrecked the havoc.
[blockquote]
"But in the past 24 hours, an elaborate game of cat and mouse has developed between AOL and Trillian creator Cerulean Studios -- as the start-up has repeatedly released new software designed to get around the block, prompting AOL to rush in and stop people from using it."
[/blockquote]
Their reason?
[blockquote]
"It has long been our very public policy that when a service unleashes software that hacks into our system, and endangers the security of our system, we stop it," - Kathy McKiernan, AOL spokeswoman
[/blockquote]
Translation:
"Trillian hacks into our advertising system, so we have to stop it. We sell ads on our AIM client. The less people using our client, the less revenue we get."
But Trillian isn't the first target...
[blockquote]
In recent years, AOL has clashed with other makers of IM software, including Microsoft and AT&T. Both companies tried to create systems that let people correspond with AIM users -- only to have them blocked.
[/blockquote]
I say...
This bully act mustn't be tolerated, so please don't switch back to the AOL client, because this is precisely what AOL wants.

It is arogent people like you that don't understand free services like AOL's IM service still cost money to run. AOL has every right to do what it is doing. 07:30 pm (6 years ago)

AOL needs to make money, too, and they're not nearly as bad as Microsoft. It's their money, it's their servers. Trillian is hacking into their servers, although it's a pretty benign hack in the sense other than it's sapping revenue from AOL. Not that I like AOL or Microsoft. I just spent about an hour getting disconnected from AOL over 5 times at my friends house trying to download some drivers for him. :). 09:02 pm (6 years ago)

instant messaging should be a free service imo and without crappy annoying banner adds and junk like that which AOL pushes on its users. And besides, aol makes enough revenue from it's internet service + (even tho' i have no statistics) how many people actually click on the adds? hah, not once in over 7 years of using the internet have i clicked on an add yet :). 09:22 pm (6 years ago)

I wish people would more or less understand that it cost money to have a program such as AIM or MSN Messenger. Deal with the AD's, crack it yourself, or make a better one w/o ads. See how long that last one last... 10:05 pm (6 years ago)

trillian rocks, AOL sucks but they have to be so damn protective, if they want people to use thier products either make it without ads or leave other programs like trillian alone. 10:26 pm (6 years ago)

Well for all of you who reckon that im should be free, go out purcase a few boxes, pay for the connections, they'd have to be at least T3, and then pay for the software developers to build an IM, then the security software to stop all the real hack attempts, and all the virus checkers, the domain name for your site, tech people to monitor a dozen IM servers. And do it all without ads, and try and make at least enough to cover your expenses. Good luck to you, I know theres no way I could trust the public to 'donate' revenue. 06:27 am (6 years ago)

we, as consumers [even if free] are entitled to the best we can find. its survival of the best program. and if aol can't keep up with itself, it shouldn't be allowed to create a non-competative environment. 08:15 am (6 years ago)

Sure you have the right to look for better software. That doesn't mean software company have the right to connect to another companies network and use it for free. 10:46 am (6 years ago)

Stews: Also, Believe it or not you are not entitled to the best AIM client you can find. You are entitled the best AIM client that AOL, its creator, allows you. Hey guess what, that is not even a monopoly. 10:54 am (6 years ago)

All I'm gonna say (since I'm a relative newbie and easy to flame if I ramble :) ) is how would you like it if somebody was linking to files on Customize.org without permission, leeching precious bandwidth, and disregarding the handful of ads that bring in a little money? 06:27 am (6 years ago)

umm... now that c|net and theregister.co.uk are mentioning trillian, which gives it a free advertisement; and cerulean studios is posting daily patches to fight back. what fun.
on second thought, AOL owns ICQ too, and apparently they could've done the same to the ICQ network, so why didn't they?
david, spo0n1983, oddfox:
well, i don't need a reminder that it costs a fortune to run an IM service, just like running a web site like custo. but don't we have the right to look for better stuff? AOL don't make the best IM client out there, cerulean studios gave us a better way to connect with AIM, and they decided to take it away from us. fine then, i'd rather not to use AIM than switching back to the AOL client, and i did.
ex0dus:
it's not like you'd really click on the ads on AIM, would you? and if using a different client is to be frowned upon, what makes cracking the AOL client more righteous? =)
