What prevents you from commenting on all new submissions

i comment in every sub that i think i can say something useful or in those ones that are completely awful

Usually, I comment only on submissions that are in a category I have experience with.

Occasionally, I'll leave a comment on a piece that really "jumps out" at me.

I judge what catches my eye, if its good or bad. Some apps I dont use, If I see some incredible, art I am drawn to it, if I seee somethin rediculous, like a "train wrek" I have to look and sometimes comment.

when something's ugly and i've got nothing to say but "it's ugly," i tend to keep it to myself.

I'll chime in. Big bold disclaimer: I'm largely speaking of the community 'in general', not JUST custo

When you do it wrong, commenting is fun and easy. You glance at a piece, and say something like "[85] I like the blue and the minimalism, good job" and that's it. That may not help an artist (at all), but hey, it's fun and easy and makes everyone feel all warm and fuzzy.

When you do it right, commenting is a miserable, thankless job. You spend a few hours carefully evaluating a few pieces, trying them out, getting inside the artists' heads -- WHY did they do this the way they did, what was their goal? And then you try to give them a detailed, constructive critique - be it good or bad. I rarely comment at custo anymore, but elsewhere on teh inrtaweb, I try to write at LEAST a paragraph about everything I review. I really do my best to help people along, especially young, novice artists who could go 'either way'; towards greatness or meaningless trendwhoring.

When I try, I try really hard.

In return for this, I get to be insulted and second-guessed! My submissions are slandered with revenge comments. I anger friends when they submit mediocre work and I don't give them a high score for being my friend. I get accused of bias (I got bitched out by some troll once for giving one of Cara's subs a 100 for instance) by people who think I only scored a piece well because the submitter is a friend, or a girl, or a fan of my work. I get accused of trolling when I point out legitimate problems with a popular piece. When I use my submission account, my work is attacked to devaluate my opinion ad hominem. When I protect myself with an alt, I'm told I don't know what I'm talking about because I've never submitted. In one case an administrator (won't name names; the story is relevant but the 'feud' is ancient history afaik) deleted a comment I left him AND issued me a policy violation for it because he didn't like what I had to say - even though I didn't leave the skin a score.

I really, REALLY used to love commenting on work. I have almost 500 reviews to my name at custo alone, and I used to leave some feedback for just about every media player skin to be released here. Nothing feels better than hearing that something you said helped an artist to find his path and make good works. But there are just too many bad things that make it miserable and sucky for me to feel good about doing it anymore.

If I really like something, I'll usually say so, but otherwise I tend to feel like anything I'd have to say is pretty much irrelevant.

I use about 2% of the programs that are skinned here. I comment on the ones I use. I have no interest in the rest.

I don't have much to say about things that don't have much to say.

what status said, i'm willing to say what needs to be said. i don't care. i try to be constructive where possible. there are always exceptions to that rule though.

I have several reasons for not commenting on every new submission:

1) Sometimes I'm not familiar with the application in question.
2) If I look at the thumbnail image and feel the submission doesn't suit my taste, I don't look at it.
3) I'm a net admin, not a graphic designer. I do praise the submissions I download. However, I am probably the last person who should criticize, seeing as how my PhotoShop skills are very basic. I do offer suggestions every once in a while, though.
4) I don't download stuff from every section. Usually it's just winamp skins and wallpaper.

Usually only comment if I'm going to praise it, or give advice on how to improve it. Usully, I only look at stuff that looks/sounds interesting to me. Also, colors play a large role I think, to what everyone looks at first, usually if there is, say, an SS that uses thier fav colors, they will notice it first, and things which use colors that don't appeal to them may go unnoticed.

I like the word usually! Usually, lol.

No time to comment. Dealing with 2 kids & house work is not easy.

That's genius Victor. I have to agree, if I like it or I think it has potential, then I'll leave a message.

if someone submits something and it's obvious it's their first submission (read: terrible), i try to help them out by pointing them in the direction of fewer colors, complementary colors, simple shapes that are more cohesive, that sort of thing. if someone does a great job (and they know they did), there are 10000 other people who will lick their anus clean so i don't feel the need to comment. i'm happy just downloading whatever it is and using it, as are most of the people who download it without commenting. i may be a terrible person for doing it, but i won't dwell on the fact that someone on the internet hates me.

Don't care enough, submissions aren't that great, it's all the same thing over and over again with little exception, don't have anything to say.... etc. etc.

I usually just comment on my friends' subs and leave it at that.
