You can definitely learn art techniques and become accomplished technicaly, but as far as doing something interesting goes with those skills, i think you either have it or you don't.

I know a lot of people who have taken many art classes, but they can't seem to use their skill to make something actually good. It's just applying the learned routine to produce something lame. I think people who have artistic talent can always improve their technical skill, but it's a lot more rare vice versa. But like always, there are exceptions to the rule.

Some people make art that's just way to technical for me. It 'works' and it follows the rules, but it sucks.

It takes a lot of work to be creative. I don't care what anyone tells you, nothing worth doing just comes to your mind in a moment of clarity. It takes effort to be creative.
That said, no one ever made anything worth looking at in less than five minutes.

I'm kind of compelled to say that no one is born with anything.
People, they all think in different ways, different Modes; and I guess it takes a certain kind of thinking process in order to make Art. You have to be a certain kind of person.
Sometimes I think the only thing that can constrict who you are is who you think you are, and who you think other people think you are....it's just that we resign ourselves to whatever feels easiest, where we feel most comfortable: for some people that's art, or lifting weights or whatever. It's not that we can't learn to be one or the other, I don't think.
You can't be taught art, but you can learn it. Certainly some people are more predisposed to things; whether that's genetics, or enviromental stuff, I'm not so sure.
The Hipster brings up a certain point that I don't agree with entirely, but reminds me of something I find myself thinking on, sometimes. People didn't create language in order to express complex ideas (that they already had inside), the creation of language is what made the formation of complex ideas possible. The understanding of these little mundane mechanics of art is kind of like a vocabulary - the fact that the more 'magical' stuff of art is so directly tied to the practical. It's depressing in some ways, that fact, but it's also pretty empowering.

I read a good book on this subject. Out of all the artists interviewed there was one main/common thread-- they all started very young. That and being raised in a good creative environment. So tell your chillins they're artists from day one and surround them with art books and supplies.

nearly everyone on my mother's side of the family are very good and creative artists, and i don't know how foar that dates back to. creativity and originality come to you slowly (in my highly respected opinion) as you mature are your mind opens to the world around you.
the techniques you use to convey that originality/creativity is learnt over time. i've taught myself nearly everythink i know about Photoshop/Illustrator/The Gimp/Stylebuilder etc. and i'm still learning new methods as time progresses oh so quickly.

excellent poll! I think most creativity is left to fate, but at the same time I think we all have influences whether we admit it or not so in that sense it can be debated that there is some learning involved. I also think ideas (the big concepts) come in a flash but realizing them take takes effort. I gave up on trying to produce an original concept. I just let them come and try to make note of them when they do.

I'm only creative between midnight and five in the morning. Pain in the ass, that is.
I think it's got to be a combination of both. Can't do anything with what's in your genes until you know how to use it.

I selected both, but my mom has the creative flare and my dad has the technical flare, so some is genetic and some is self taught. Guess it can work wither way... but for the most part, you either have the imagination or you dont.

hmmm,
reminds me of a time when alot of friends/people asked me the question "who taught you how to draw?" i always thought it was a dumb question cause the answer was always "no one". i started drawing at a very early age (so my mum says) and no one else in my family has artistic talent. i guess if you love drawing/creating than you'll get good at it. ______________.. both.
the technical aspects can be learned at any time because they are the obstacles to translating your expression to some medium. but i'm convinced that you are most moulded artistically while you are a child still picking up language, because art is expression. as a child, whatever you learn becomes a part of you for the rest of your life unless you have some debilitating injury later on or something.
genetically, there exist savants, or those with brains conducive to whatever they do, for whatever reason; so that's a plus if it helps in being perceived artistically by others.
observation and practice are important regardless. it takes a lot of work and dedication. if you are able, and you do it a lot, then you can do it (ok, that was sort of too-plainly put, but you know what i mean).

You can't learn to be a real creative mind, if you are learning to be creative you are copying, and the product won't be creative at all.
In my opinion it Must be genetic, and you only start to develop it.

Exerpt from David Bartholomae's Inventing the University:
Creativity is combining the practical knowledge and guidelines of a discipline with one's original ideas tp bring about a new, original end result, on that is different from everyone else's.

Genetic, art is noticing something that noone has seen before and capturing it in a unique setting. How can someone teach what noone has seen or captured?
