If one had asked me a few years ago the number would be rather large. These days, not so much. You find that you don't use apps for 3d modeling and vector illustration when, well, those aren't the things you do.

do you think it would cost any less if people didn't steal it, and we all played nice with the other kids?

cost should not be a barrier in art, although you could argue that spending a few grand would make one redouble their efforts.

i have little desire to steal new tools, i like the ones i have, i did buy photoshop though.

mostly i want math and CAD tools these days, soon i reckon ill suck it up and buy Mathematica (only like 160 bucks to turn your computer into an amazingly powerful math tool) but that is only cause i spend a lot of time on calc III lab's this semester.

also, as i student i have access to droves of computers that have the software...which is amazing, every computer has at least $10000 of useful stuffs.

so....um...

It's hard to say. I buy all of my software legally initially, but I admit that I pirate updates. I've given Adobe almost $2,500 over the years, and instead of treating me like a valued customer, they demand $200 a year for updates, add trivial (often useless) features, and make sure that any file generated by the new software will be incompatible with my old version to force me to upgrade.

Screw that. They already got my pound of flesh.

The rest of my software and games are all legit, and my MP3 collection is about 95% legit.

So I'm not 100% legal, but I feel like I'm 100% ethical.

If I can't afford a given software suite anyway, and I download and use a cracked copy of said software instead, the company who makes it isn't losing any profits because I wouldn't be buying it even if I decided not to choose the questionable route of piracy.

I think the only way piracy can be combated is to make the software they sell more accessible to everyone... not just those making better-than-average salaries. Then they'd probably have more legal paying customers, because more people could afford to be legal, and therefore piracy would drop as a result. Profits could also be kept at least close to what they are now, due to the increase in VOLUME sales to outfits currently unwilling/unable to buy large numbers of licences for expensive software.

So, if all new cars sold for 1000 dollars, they'd make up for it through volume, right?

So any product, should just be able to cut it's costs down next to nothing and simply make up for it through increased sales?

The price of most software was established before the advent of piracy and remains the same because the same percentage of people actually buy it.

Perhaps the prices would fall if more people actually bought it, but it won't drop simply because some thieves say if the price drops they'll buy it then.

They are covering costs and making profits by charging what what the market will bear to the people who honestly buy the software.

People pirate games all the time, and they're completely affordable. I bet most people here pirate things like the full version of winamp, windows, stylexp, etc.

All that software is completely affordable.

in response to what collosus said:
You can't compare the idea of dropping the costs of computer software to the cost of dropping car prices. You know why? because Xyphur was talking about ways to reduce software piracy. But you don't need to do that for cars because people cant simply go online and illegally download a pirated car haha.
well said Xyphur

Theft is theft. Cars are easily stolen, esp. in larger cities. Would lowering car prices reduce car theft?

No it would not.

Just because something is easily stolen doesn't mean the producer needs to make a concession to the criminals.

Well said, me.

What it all boils down to is you guys are trying somehow make it seem like it's their fault, like they FORCE you to steal it. Like you have no choice.

I have news for you, you don't NEED the software, it's a luxury. When you dl it you make a choice to to steal it. Just because it's easy to do you and difficult to get caught you pretend it's somehow less wrong, less like stealing. Actually, in the eyes of the law, it's the same as stealing a car.

Why should they lower their prices? How do they know you'll buy it? You're a fucking thief, why should they trust you?

About $5000...:: photoshop CS2, windows XP, StyleXP, Macromedia studio (dreamweaver, flash, freehand, etc), limewire pro, adobe acrobat pro, and about 30 other apps...

colossus72 if you look at the age of those who say software is exspensive, and those who say its not, you'll find something interesting. those who do say its exspensive and thieve from programmser (such as myself) are all kids w/ no jobs. meanwhile those of us who're older and have real jobs relaize that "omg! this really isn't exspensive at all, I think I'm gonna buy it"

Just so that the kids don't feel left out I'll even tear a strip out of those who're just as old as I and bitch that software is expsensive. really its not.

I bought me a copy of PS6 back in 2001, and it set me back a mear 599$. guess how much ps cs2 costs, yup thats right 599$. the best part is that after I finished that job I was working on ps had paid for its self in the end.

i'm not a professional so i won't buy original software just to try it. yeah, i know what you're saying...use demo versions. But demo only last for 30 days and I don't have time to test a program in 30 days. But I don't use illegal software to commercial purposes.

There will always be an undeground "industry" - a rogue element. Its existence doesn't justify its aims. But it is there, and it is safe to assume it will persist.

It is still thievery (even if from strictly moral perspective), and it is still illegal.

You are free to take your chances and do what you please. Just don't justify what you do on the basis of the argument "if it was cheaper I'd actually buy it."

Some criminals of this nature are good at it, and profit immensely. Others do not. Thievery, on its own, is not a dumb activity in which to engage. Posting exactly *what* you stole in a thread that does not ask you to do so, however, is.

I have a huge library of expensive software that I don't use, just to share with my mates.

I don't know, may be I like to sell it... but i don't like to buy it. As far as I know, most of it it's overpriced... like 300%.

The computers I use in the office are 100% legit. The one I have at home only has 1 legal program, PowerDVD. And only because it came free with a DVD drive I bought. Everything else is pirated. OS, office suite, PS, autoCAD, etc. I know, it's wrong, but it's just so easy. And really, why spend $3K on software, when I can get it free.

To be fair, I do agree with colossus. I am a thief and the fact that the software is freely available is not an excuse for taking it.
