Certainly. It'll encourage people to step up their game. Good for the site's reputation as well.

Given that I've seen the waves of shitty walls that get submitted, wallpaper moderation is a fucking must.

I vote yes....but only in moderation. It is very subjective to rate what is a "bad" and "good" wall. If walls that are simply creative, and deviate from the norm are being deleted because of lack of mass appeal, then that isn't fair. Nonetheless, I think that some painfully shitty and/or offensive walls have the right to be deleted.

good god yes. and its about time as well. every other site has moderation in some shape or form to weed out the crap.

maybe now all of these simple photo's and crappy filter jobs won't show up on the main page.

I remember when I first came to this site, I submitted a wallpaper pack. It was screened. I thought at the time it was KICK ASS! but now I look back, it's only so so. Perhaps a 65-70. I say thank you to the staff to devoting so much time to wiping up our shit. Theres already a LOAD of walls everyday... and to be frank, theres too many shit walls up still... sorry folks :p I'm a pessimist.

yeah when i first started i had some walls deleted. i know how it rolls, but i learnt fast.

we can learn from wallpaper moderation, it teaches us to keep our ass in gear and produce quality works, not the same old butt browns.

Even though I've never submitted a wallpaper (being that I'm still trying to learn how to use PS), I do agree with moderating submissions. When I do decide to submit something, I would like someone to tell me it's OK, or completely rip me a new one by telling me I suck. I've seen DeviantArt material and I didn't like it. Pretty much anything you submit is posted. It's real messy and dificult to find something nice.

I say no to moderating submissions. I for one have a very minimal taste, to the poitn where most people would find a lot of the wallpapers I like to be way too sparse to be called a substantial piece of art. Furthermore, to sort through the stuff you would call "crap" requires nothing more than a glance at the public rating and the thumbnail. I do not always agree with the moderators' opinions of "quality," especially when it comes to picking a featured skin. Better to have a wide selection than a distilled group of wallpapers selected by a handful of particular people.

02:28 pm (3 years ago)
Avatar-50x50

Minimalism, even to the extreme, if executed well, is not crap.

Crap is readily identifiable as such.

Disagreements over quality are bound to happen. The moderators, however, guage the pulse and opinions of the custo community as a WHOLE, and they have been successful thus far.

But, as anyone else, you're entitled . . .

I pretty much agree with fearpi, IT ISN"T hard to browse through a bunch of wallpapers and sometimes I like things that most people don't and those walls should still be given a chance. At least leave them up for a couple days with a low rating so I have a chance to decide for myself! ;)

its a sad sad day for custo if they start moderating the walls, I have been a visitor to this site since 1998, and this is the only place I go to get walls, dont ruin it please

They already do moderate walls, they HAVE BEEN moderating them for years according to FrostedFlames... I think it's kinda sad too, unless the work is literally something that looks as if it took maybe 5 minutes, all walls should at least get a chance after being rated by the admins. Just a week is not asking much and it would at least give people a chance to form thier own opinions and decide for themselves. When I read that agreement I assumed it meant they could remove things such as blatant porn or walls that just look like something thrown together in MSPaint in like 2 seconds. Not stuff the admins considered "not good enough" They should at least give us a list of standards. I don't know why I care so much seeing as how I don't even make wallpapers but as a downloader of wallpapers I want to make my own decisions and choose amongst a wide variety and selection. I want to make my own judgements! ;)

Yep. Moderation in some form has been going on for YEARS. I've been a member (fairly active) since August of 2002.

It is not only in line with the Submission Agreement to which members consent by registering, but by the looks of this poll, 86% are in favour of it.

There is indeed a wide variety and selection of wallpapers. You've got thousands to choose from, and thre are news ones every day. Except they are filtered. You don't really know *which* walls didn't make the cut, right? So then choose from what is available, like you'd do anywhere, and simply forget about what you DON'T see.

It's that simple.

10:56 pm (3 years ago)
Avatar-50x50

Walls tend to look cleaner and sexier after moderation. And obviously it's easier to find stuff that matches with something more minimal. It's the idea of good taste, it's just easier for simplicity to look more refined. Three words: less is more ;) I don't mind abstract once in a while if it's tastefully done, but most of the time I prefer moderation, it's just easier and keener on the eye.

11:57 pm (3 years ago)
Avatar-50x50

"Moderation" means the removal of wallpapers by the "moderators" at their discretion, not a trend towards minimalism!

Walls tend to look invisible after moderation, not cleaner or sexier. ;-) Unless the person reposts the wall later, having done a better job with it.

it is much more like pixelgirl does with submissions, and what is the result? they got lots of pretty nice walls

Most moderated walls are not seen by users. They don't make it to the front page and have usually only been on the site for a day or 2 or maybe even less. In order for you to say that you disagree with which walls the staff removes, then you either
A) check the site at a great frequency and browse all wallpapers memorizing them so well that you would notice if one was removed later (unlikely)
or B) your wallpaper with all the filters and lens flares was really cool, but it got removed (more likely)
C) you havent really noticed wallpaper moderation, but since its been brought to your attention, it gives you something to argue/complain about

yes..if you by 'moderation' want to mean selection...but not to much. you can't decide if it is a bad work or a good work. "only God can judge me" :p

Yes. Not only does it make the submitters work harder to make their walls better, but it keeps everyone else from having to sift through crap.

i like how the only people disagreeing with wallpaper moderation are people i've never seen or heard of. Not active members of the community.

I for one, hands down, think moderation is a must. Custo does a DAMN GOOD job of doing so too. With people like j3 and c72 who know their shit about wallpapers and asthetics (along with the other admins who def have design sense) theres no doubt in my mind that they can spot a good sub versus a bad one.

Customize.org trys to keep a reputation of quality. Only accepting the best and well if your idea of good is below custo's standards then you dont need to be here.

When you come here dont you open the new uploads section in hopes of finding something new and revolutionary for you to use on your desktop? Without moderation all your gonna see when opening that section is screenshots filled with default windows themes with a dif background or wallpapers using photoshops cutout filter or lens flares. If thats what you like well then the only thing i can tell you is...deviantart is only a few clicks and keystrokes away.

The day custo eliminates moderation is the day i leave. We've all at one point or another seen the new uploads flooded with a users personal pics of themselves and such. Without moderation, have fun staring at some kids car or someones face for the next 100 subs you have to search through to get something decent.

You're right, I mean, at the Olympics EVERYONE should get the gold medal, awarded directly from Jesus himself.

It doesn't matter what the end result is, just that you tried! Heck, even if you don't try, you should be praised! Judging is really bad because every individual has an unalienable human right to put their stuff in the public eye and expect nothing but a gush of praise and admiration!

Everyone does wonderful, unique work and this site is completely free to run and owned by the public. Snowflakes, one and all. Everybody.

Give me a break.

Honestly, I don't think there is nearly enough moderation. I'd like to see a lot more.

I'm tired of sifting through 14 shitty wallpapers to find one decent one.

If you're reading this and you have submitted a wallpaper, I'm probably talking about one of yours.

86% vs. 14%.

That's all that really matters.

i just got an idea:

what about something like a recycle bin?

so there, after the moderation, you can browse the unwanted by the admins and, if some of the walls that are in there has a good response from the users, then that wall could be moved to the wallpaper section.

Otherwise, that recycle bin could be cleaned up after 5 o 7 days.

I don't know how this could be implemented but take this as a concept.

I'm loving Dios's comment above, and think it makes perfect sense. I agree with both parties, though I voted for NO modification, simply because I"m just too liberal on things like this I guess. I feel that all deserve a chance, publicly, not privately, but hey, it doesn't matter to me either way really. I look for the good walls, that's it. I run across some bad ones, but, usually find the good one's quickly, and I"m still on dial-up :) Either way, I'm still happy, regardless, but again I think Dios's idea is a damn good one, something to think about indeed.
