Artist's Note
More customization this time around. A bright 3D look, but without crystal for the most part. Widgets and applets are visible, as well as an interactive, themable clock in the taskbar.

Amazing how much you invested in switching to linux. As i read the forum posts with your questions and i couldnīt believe it... the other day you were talking like somebody who is used to the system. The immensive number of extensions and widgets you are showing makes the advertisement for linux even more attractive ;). Now i have OpenOffice and Firefox i shouldnīt be that afraid of chaning the operating system to the alternative..because every program i switched to is with no question better. Open Office needs time to get used to it and i am missing features from the Office Package. Oh no.. i am getting away from your screenshot. When i compare it to other mandrake screenshots i saw itīs brilliant. The customizing goes into one direction and makes a great layout. Thatīs a new way for customize and for sure worth a try for the guys here who donīt know what to do with their freetime. Great :)

Well done. You represent the linux custimization world well. Imrik is correct, there are hundreds and hundreds of themes out there. For those of you who are into the simplistic look, checkout openbox.
And Teque5: It may take up a lot of desktop, but who cares when you have multiple screens... yeah, linux rocks. I personally use gentoo and it is amazing. Perhaps I will post a screenshot or two later.

there's way more ways to custo linux than using kde + plastik which is basically the only alternative to the ugly default kde theme. but nuvola icon set is sweet. and the sys monitor stuff is cool. but i'd think that all that stuff is just eye candy, not really useful. but that's just me. usability over eye candy is just something i go for usually.
btw mandrake isn't the only distro worth checking out, fedora is great too. but for some of the more adventurous ones try debian or suse or gentoo or slackware. all great distros but not exactly the most easy. but at the end, i would suggest these if you really want to give linux a try.

Thanks for all the comments! Imrik - always a pleasure :-)
NOTE: Keep in mind, everyone, that Linux, whether it is the GNOME or KDE desktop environment, can be made to look however you want. It can be bubbly 3D, or flat, or pixelly. If you like the awesome Nano visual style created by the 4imp team, then KDE can be customized to look like that, it's just a matter of finding the theme and the necessary accessories, or making that theme yourself. I simply chose a cool, user-friendly 3D look. A number of visual styles have been ported to KDE, such as Odyssey3, even Milk!! Gnome, as far as I know, has more themes for it than KDE. Browse around the web and have a look at some KDE and Gnome screenshots.
I just showed you ONE flavour out of MANY.
rhewt: Thank you, that is quite a compliment, especially in light of the fact that I'm so new to Linux. More proof that Linux is an OS for everyone, and that it gets you up and working and being productive very quickly. I've only been using Linux for less than a month, and it's a breeze. Hasn't crashed or broken . . . not even once. My uptimes are usually over two weeks. Programs don't crash either, except when I install incorrect versions. Solution: compile from source. Easy peezy. EDIT:::::::: munkay: You're 100% right. I'm actually happy that I haven't even scratched the surface yet. :-)
