My current desktop. Don't know if I'll keep it this way for long, as it's sorta overly bright for my usual tastes. Everything except the shelves, white desktop, and framed picture is an icon for some application, server, or folder. The large iMacs in the middle are my hard drives. I got the icons to be different sizes by setting the desktop icon size to 128, so that the monitors would be an approximately correct size in relation to the desktop, then changed the other icon's sizes in Photoshop, so that most other icons are much smaller than 128. "Go to the Internet" is just Safari, renamed, and with a different icon. It's turned out to be pretty functional. It's very easy to identify the items on the desktop in a second, instead of looking through one long list of icons that are all the same size arraigned in 2 dimensional rows across the screen. Overall it's turned out to be a functional/useful environment.

First, thanks DoS!... and second, yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Does anybody know a program or techniqe for selectively turning desktop item's names off?
since you need to have opened windows to work around, this is not the best desktop in usability. But, it has style, a lot of it, so thumbs up for style, but thumbs down for usability... anyways in this case, style wins. For sure.
Good lord!! .. It would really suck if you had to relaunch Finder for whatever reason because then you'd have to start over re-positioning the icons.
@abbaZaba, this is not Windows but I know what you mean. The person who posted this desktop can use something like this " "(one space) or " "(two spaces) etc. for each of the icons.
The the poster of this desktop: I don't know if you have dragged all the apps to your desktop, but I think you should invest in CandyBar and make a blank image for the shortcut icon, apply that and leave the the apps in their respective folders - then just make shortcuts on your desktop. I see one shortcut on there so I assumed you have all your apps on the desktop.
