How To Create Wallpapers

Technical Aspect

The artist is going to want to start with a two dimensional array of pixels, preferably an array where its dimensions conform to the highest mainstream screen resolution of the most popular or standardized aspect ratios. The reason for making a wallpaper in the highest mainstream screen resolution is so that other users, using a smaller resolution (but same aspect ratio) can size down the image and still maintain a high level of quality and avoid stretching or cropping.

In the case of Customize.org, the submission engine does this for the artist automatically; so when submitting to Customize.org the artist only has to submit the highest mainstream screen resolution of each popular aspect ratio! The following is a list of common aspect ratios that should be addressed when creating your wallpaper. Also listed are the highest mainstream screen resolutions (note: the highest mainstream screen resolutions are subject to change as displays become better in the future)

Common Aspect Ratios

  • Single Display
    • 1.25 (1280×1024 pixels)
    • 1.33- (1600×1200 pixels)
  • Single Display (Wide Screen)
    • 1.6 (2560×1600 pixels)

For dual display wallpapers, the artist should follow the same rules, but multiply the highest mainstream screen resolution width and the aspect ratios by two. The following is a list of common aspect ratios for dual displays.

Common Aspect Ratios For Dual Displays

  • Dual Display
    • 2.5 (2560×1024 pixels)
    • 2.66- (3200×1200 pixels)
  • Dual Display (Wide Screen)
    • 3.2 (5120×1600 pixels)

A Note On Pixel Precision

Its important to note that if absolute pixel precision is required (i.e. the use of pixel fonts), the artist must manually resize the images so that the elements that require pixel precision are not anti aliased or blurred by an image resizing algorithm. As of now the only way to do this on Customize.org is to submit all the different sized wallpapers you manually resized despite the fact that the Customize.org submission engine will still automatically resize the images. Doing this, insures there will be a version available to Customize.org users that is resized to the artist’s liking.

Creative Aspect

There is an infinite number of ways add colors to your array of pixels.
